The O2Compost Micro-Bin Compost Kit is ideal for managing livestock manure of every variety as well as landscaping waste, food waste and pet wastes. It is perfect for processing manure from 1 to 4 horses, or the equivalent number of sheep and goats, chickens, rabbits, etc. It is also perfect for grass clippings, leaves and other garden debris along with kitchen scraps from the home, schools, summer camps, etc. By simply managing the flow of air through the compost mix, this method of composting: controls nuisance odors, rodents and flies; destroys weed seeds and pathogens in the mix; greatly expedites the composting process; and eliminates impacts to the environment – all without turning the compost pile. The finished compost is ready to spread on pastures or use in the garden within 30- to 60-days. The finished compost may also be used as a feedstock for worm bins (vermi-compost systems) or sold to local gardeners, nurseries and landscapers. The kit includes a training manual that teaches the basics of aerated composting, along with six bin designs, a small aeration blower, a timer to operate the blower, a 20-inch temperature probe, and an aeration manifold. With simple hand tools, you’ll be able to construct this portable compost system within a few hours using locally purchased plywood and lumber. In her book, “How to be the Perfect Horsekeeper”, Dr. Karen Hayes describes the O2Compost Micro-Bin as “The Perfect Manure Management System”. The corrugated PVC drain tiles supplied with the system did not hold up well under the weight of the contents of the Micro bin. After 60 days under the bin they were partially collapsed. Had to replace with solid drain tiles which have held up much better. You can be as frugal or elaborate with your bin construction as you desire if cost is your concern or looks don't matter much. Product instruction manual supplied is well drafted and easy to follow. Composting guidelines included is very helpful as well.I started out with one Micro bin and have expanded to two. The finished product is very well broken down and the Nutrients give gardeners an excellent alternative to commercial fertilizers. Noxious weeds are all but eliminated with this system compared to static pile. I also made my own out of some 3 gallon buckets. The happy farmer unit has never rotted the food. Yes there is an odor, but it is not rotten- my homemade bucket at one point was not airtight and it rotted food- there is a very big difference. The smell is a pickled smell, and I suppose it is stinky but honestly its not too bad. We use ours inside only. One tip is to put a plastic bag inside on top of the food and push it down so it eliminatess any air. The fermenting process is anaerobic so any oxygen in there just slows things down.It isn't effortless, yes you have to sprinkle the powder on every time you use it, and every once in a while you have to drain it out- this isn't tough, and for me it helps to remind me to water the plants since it works as good fertilizer.
