I didn't know I needed this until I opened the gift box and saw it. Clever little box keeps the odors in check. Even the pulp from juicing, which normally starts to ferment in hours, stays pretty much odorless in this compost collector.The box looks rather nice, for what it is, but it isn't something I want to keep on the counter so it resides under the kitchen sink. It's not very large, not much bigger than my toaster, but deeper. I empty it every other day - depending on what I'm cooking it may take three days to fill up. The spring loaded lid contains small perforations that allows air to circulate but keeps out the flies. Reasonably priced, takes up less space on the counter, does a fairly good job of containing the odors, is very easy to carry (through the 3 doors I have to open on my trip to the composter), holds more than a days worth of compostable items, and looks attractive enough on the counter top that even my dear mother allows as how she would have it at her house. It sets up a bit like lincoln logs--it is simply a bunch of pressure treated boards with notches on each end that stack to make a square enclosure for composting. The bottom boards are different, to make the whole thing solid. Despite the fact that it isn't fastened with screw or nails, it holds together. It isn't particularly large, but it would be a good size for kitchen scraps and a small garden. It is also small/cheap enough to have two that you alternate between.We have also used a black plastic composter (unfortunately we lost it in a few years ago in a move), which had advantages: it had a lid to keep out pests, and allowed the sun to help heat up the compost (and thus compost faster). They are also usually larger as well. Some cities give plastic compost bins away, and if you can get a free one it would be preferable. However, this is a nice cheap alternative if you aren't ready to build your own, and you don't...
