It sets up a bit like lincoln logs--it is simply a bunch of pressure treated boards with notches on each end that stack to make a square enclosure for composting. The bottom boards are different, to make the whole thing solid. Despite the fact that it isn't fastened with screw or nails, it holds together. It isn't particularly large, but it would be a good size for kitchen scraps and a small garden. It is also small/cheap enough to have two that you alternate between.We have also used a black plastic composter (unfortunately we lost it in a few years ago in a move), which had advantages: it had a lid to keep out pests, and allowed the sun to help heat up the compost (and thus compost faster). They are also usually larger as well. Some cities give plastic compost bins away, and if you can get a free one it would be preferable. However, this is a nice cheap alternative if you aren't ready to build your own, and you don't... I have a small yard within a picket fence that can be viewed by all the neighbors. I generate a lot of material because of 2 large flower gardens and kitchen discards (coffee grounds etc...) so I can't have a big ugly compost pile. Looks so much nicer than the big plastic ones you can get at the super-stores. I had a plastic tumbler compost bin before and it was hard to turn and attracted lots of roaches. This one gives you the natural weight of the compost to generate heat. Also much better to have contact with ground for natural worm composting assistance.Also simple to take apart to turn or spread the compost. It is a classic design that works. |
